Ohio Unemployment and ID Theft
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services is sending out 1099G to all individuals who received unemployment compensation in 2020. This is a document that shows how much a person received in unemployment compensation and is also sent to the Internal Revenue Service. Yet it is apparent that in Ohio there was some fraud going on as some individuals are receiving a 1099G but did not receive any unemployment compensation.
If this has happened to you then you have been the victim of Identity Theft and should take the following steps as soon as possible.
- Contact your local police department and file a police report simply describing what occurred;
- File an Identity Theft Affidavit with the Internal Revenue Service and request an Identity PIN for the filing of your 2020 tax return;
- File an Identity Theft Affidavit with the Ohio Attorney General Office;
- Get a copy of your credit report from one of the three major credit reporting agencies (or all three) to see if there have been any authorized transactions on your account.
- Place a credit freeze with the three major credit reporting agencies.
- Check with your local tax preparer on the best way to handle the fraudulent 1099G on your 2020 tax return
As with any Identity Theft the most important item is to DOCUMENT EVERYTHING and be as proactive as you possibly can.
